Overview

With the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, the Consortium of Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania) (coordinator), Riga Stradins University (Latvia), the Catholic University in Ruzomberok (Slovakia) and the ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal) presents “European Joint Master in Social Work with Children and Youth”.

The goal of the European Joint Master’s programme ESWOCHY is to prepare highly skilled professionals to be leaders in the field of international, intercultural and comparative social work with children and youth. The students will possess an educational and experiential foundation that combines theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, comparative international research, policy development and the newest knowledge of using ICT in social work practice with children and youth. These specialists will be able to promote empowerment and liberation of children and young people, based on principles of social justice, human rights, responsibility and respect for diversities.

The awarded degree of European Joint Master in Social Work with Children and Youth is equivalent to:

- Master’s degree in Social Sciences (Field of Social Work) in Lithuanian qualifications framework;
- Master’s Degree in Social Work in Latvian qualifications framework;
- Master’s Degree in social work in Slovak qualifications framework;
- Master’s Degree in Social Work in Portuguese qualifications framework.

Programme structure

The duration of the programme is 2 years (120 ECTS). Students’ workload volume of one-year is 60 ECTS and one semester is 30 ECTS.

Programme is based on three main basic blocks: theory (78 ECTS), scientific research practice (6 ECTS) and research (36 ECTS).

A student will study in different Consortium partner university each semester. Importantly, the entire cohort of ESWOCHY students will rotate together for four study semesters to ensure course and group integration. A compulsory mobility path consisting of three mobilities defined as studying full semesters at four different Consortium Universities and obtaining at least 30 ECTS from each of these Universities. First study semester shall be organized in MRU, Second – in RSU, Third – in CU, Fourth – in ISCTE.

Students will have an internship “Scientific Research Practice” in duration of 1months full-time ( 6 ECTS) and will also have to prepare and defend Master Thesis.

The degree shall not be awarded to students unless they have: (1) gathered 120 ECTS within the Programme, (2) completed the four semesters of the Programme, (3) performed the compulsory mobility, (4) completed the internship, and (5) successfully passed the thesis defence.

Career opportunities

Programme graduates will have career opportunities in all kind of socio-educational service institutions that provide different social services for children and youth. Graduates will be able to design, implement and develop modern social work strategies in the international labour market. Programme graduates, as qualified social work with children and youth specialists, will be able to realize their career tasks:

- in children and youth day centers especially working with children and youth from social risk families;
- in juvenile justice institutions as providers of social services for delinquent children and youth;
- in implementing youth policy in municipalities;
- in improving quality of social work with migrants;
- in developing career guidance services for children and youth;
- in developing universal multifunctional centers.

During the Programme acquired knowledge and skills would allow graduates to address above mentioned needs of children and youth and to plan, organize, manage and evaluate social work process in different multicultural environments.
